Aim and Scope
Philanthropia publishes research that explores the fundamental questions surrounding philanthropy and civil society through the lens of the humanities and normative theory. The journal provides a platform for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary scholarship that examines the ethical, philosophical, cultural, and historical dimensions of giving, voluntary action, and collective engagement.
We seek contributions that address complex issues related to the values, principles, and narratives that shape philanthropic practices and the development of civil society, whether from a general theoretical perspective or in relation to specific cultural and historical contexts. Articles may explore themes such as the moral and symbolic foundations of giving, the role of philanthropy in societal transformation, and the evolution of ideas about collective responsibility and action.
A particular focus is given to research that develops humanities-based methodologies and theoretical frameworks for advancing the understanding of philanthropy and civil society. This distinguishes Philanthropia as a journal uniquely situated to highlight the reflective and interpretive dimensions of these fields
Open Access Policy
This journal provides open access to its content, based on the principle that offering the public free access to research helps a greater global exchange of knowledge.
Peer Review Process
Philanthropia follows a double-blind review process, ensuring that the identities of authors and reviewers remain anonymous to one another. Articles are chosen for their rigor of analysis, appropriateness, and originality. Each submission is reviewed by two independent experts chosen by the editors. Reviewers are independent of the authors, i.e. not affiliated with the same institution.
The purpose of the peer review is to:
- Provide the editorial team with insights for making informed decisions regarding the manuscript's suitability for publication.
- Offer constructive feedback to authors to help them refine and enhance their work.
In cases where a manuscript is not deemed suitable for publication, reviewers are expected to clearly outline the weaknesses or deficiencies of the work. This ensures that authors understand the reasons for the decision and are better equipped to revise their manuscript for submission to other outlets.
The editors reserve the right to reject manuscripts outright or request revisions prior to acceptance. This may include both minor adjustments and substantial rewriting to meet the journal’s standards.
